De Waterput is een begrip in Bergen op Zoom. De zaak ademt muzie uit en eigenaal Gilly laat dit elke dag weer zien. Niet alleen kun je er terecht voor al je CD's en DVD's, maar ook heeft deze winkel nooit afstand gedaan van het vinyl. En dat is maar goed ook, want vinyl is nog nooit zo p[opulair geweest. Bij Gilly c.s. kun je dan ook terecht voor de meest uiteenlopende muziek publicaties.

Douglas Firs live in De Waterput
Na de verplichte adempauze vindt op zaterdag 2 oktober de eerste instore van een nieuwe reeks plaats. Popspeciaalzaak De Waterput, Bosstraat 36 in Bergen op Zoom begroet dan de Belgische artiest Douglas Firs. Gezegend met een machtig stemgeluid, ook in de hogere regionen, en de gave steeds de juiste muzikanten om hen heen te verzamelen, weet singer-songwriter Gertjan van Hellemont zijn liedjes, geschreven in de beste traditie van Ryan Adams, Wilco en die eeuwige liefde voor Bob Dylan, altijd van de juiste toon, woorden en snik te voorzien. Zijn overal lyrisch ontvangen nieuwe album Heart Of A Mother staat bol van liefde en verdriet. Er is geen krachtiger beeld in de wereld waar meer liefde doorheen stroomt dan een moederhart. Gertjan hoorde binnen één week dat zijn vriendin zwanger was én dat zijn moeder terminaal ziek was. Douglas First laat de luisteraar met hem heen en weer slingeren tussen de meest heftige emoties die hij al bezong. Een ontroerende ode aan twee moeders, met herfstakkoorden en meerstemmigheid verenigd op een integer monument van een album. De instore in De Waterput vangt aan om 15.00 uur. De toegang is gratis.

Claw Boys Claw live in Waterput
Onverslijtbaar. Nog altijd verschroeiend goed. De in 1983 opgerichte band Claw Boys Claw mag als peetvader van de garagerock in Nederland gezien worden. Zanger Peter te Bos en gitarist John Cameron blijven zichzelf steeds opnieuw uitvinden en met hun strakke ritmesectie maken ze nog altijd griezelige goede pop- en rockmuziek. Op vrijdag 15 oktober stelt de band in hun favoriete platenzaak De Waterput (die was al vele keren eerder te gast, iedere keer was het een feestje) het splinternieuwe album Kite voor. Dat is uiteraard wederom hun beste plaat ooit. Sleet zit er nog altijd niet op, podiumbeest Te Bos is tenslotte ook pas 70 jaar jong. Het instore-optreden tussen de platenbakken van popspeciaalzaak De Waterput vangt vrijdag 15 oktober om 17.00 uur, de toegang is gratis.

Sloper live in De Waterput.
De nieuwe topformatie van de drummers Cesar Zuiderwijk (Golden Earring) en Mario Goossens (Triggerfinger) komen met hun twee kompanen op zaterdag 16 oktober hun debuutalbum Pulverise live in De Waterput in Bergen op Zoom presenteren. De albumtitel betekent verpulveren. Dat is wat slopers doen. Deels, want je kunt ook iets met beleid subtiel ontmantelen. Deze twee drummers weten uiteraard wat hard slaan is, maar ze hebben beiden veel meer in hun mars dan dat alleen. Hun album is ook allesbehalve een drumplaat? Het stevige geluid balanceert tussen dat van ‘classic’ rockgroepen uit de 70’s en de peetvader van de stonerrock, Masters of Reality. Riffs en roffels, zo knipogen ze ietwat logisch in hun biografie, want die andere twee mannen zijn gitaristen. De grootste troef aan dit kwartet is die man vooraan: Peter Shoulder. Een Brit geboren met een moordstrot voor dit type rock. De instore op 16 oktober vangt aan om 15.00 uur, de toegang is gratis!

Reggae tip! (Don Letts - Late Night Tales)
Cultural polymath - pop star, filmmaker, radio broadcaster, commentator, Grammy winner. Oh and DJ, too. Take your pick from the many coats worn by our selector, Don Letts aka The Rebel Dread.
Born in Brixton, a child of the Windrush Generation, Letts’ slippery and unorthodox career is somewhat hard to define, without taking a few detours around London, New York and Jamaica. He began his working life managing the dauntingly hip Acme Attractions on Chelsea’s Kings Road, where he made a mark with his attitude, dress and, especially, the pounding dub reggae that vibrated the shop’s walls. His first gig as a DJ at the short-lived Roxy in Neal Street, became mythical for turning a generation of punks on to reggae. They in turn hipped him to their DIY ethos resulting in his reinvention as a filmmaker. This led to a shed-load of music videos (Linton Kwesi Johnson, The Clash, Bob Marley) not to mention documentaries on the likes of Gil Scott-Heron, George Clinton and Sun Ra.
Jazz Tip! (V/A - Utopic Cities)
Utopic Cities is an eclectic selection of forward-thinking jazz from the Belgian underground, including the left-field fusion of Marc Moulin's Placebo, Koen De Bruyne and Solis Lacus; the intense post-bop of Jacques Pelzer and Lou MacConnell; the cutting edge soul jazz of Philip Catherine and Open Sky Unit or the otherworldly avant-garde of Babs Robert and the Brussels Art Quintet. Recorded in the aftermath of the revolutionary year 1968, this music is the fruit of a highly creative momentum in Belgian jazz history that produced a unique sound which distinguishes itself from its American source of inspiration by an indefinable characteristic that can be hardly better described than 'Belgian'.

This compilation of songs is not meant as a historic reflection of popular music of the “Arab world.” It is a very personal selection of songs we grew to like at Habibi Funk. It is music that historically never existed as a unified musical genre. We think it’s important to make this distinction and to have the listener understand that the majority of the music on this compilation does not come from the highly famous names of the musical spectrum of North Africa and the Middle East. Instead, the final body compiled for this record consists of some – at least for us – nichey pearls and often overlooked artists; resulting in a diverse range of styles from Egyptian organ funk, disco sounds from Morocco, an example of the lively reggae scene of Libya, political songs from Lebanon, soundtrack music from Alge- ria, a musical union between Kenya and Oman, and much more.

Definitive Sounds Of New York Jazz Punk Afro Funk Disco Machine
New York's early '80s underground left an indelible mark on dance music culture. The potent brew of punk rock's DIY, band-centred ethic and disco's dance floor nous had a second wave in the early '00s thanks to labels like DFA and The Rapture's evergreen "House Of Jealous Lovers," but in more recent times you could still hear that same unapologetically messy, irrepressibly funky cocktail in groups like Golden Teacher. Producers like Maurice Fulton, The Maghreban and Powder sport a little of that same renegade magic in their music, where tumbling live drums and dirty plucked bass fill the rhythm section with an energy unproducible by tightly sequenced machines.

Park Hye Jin – Before I Die
Singing and rapping in Korean and English, the Los Angeles-based electronic producer takes tentative steps toward reinventing herself as a songwriter. In the past three years,박혜진 Park Hye Jin has moved from Seoul to Melbourne to London to Los Angeles. Before I Die, her first full-length, which she made entirely during the pandemic, excavates the feelings of isolation and vulnerability triggered by those transitions: the injustice of feeling wronged, the ache of familial longing, the loss of her sense of self. Where 2018’s breakthrough EP If U Want It and 2020’s How Can I EP focused on dreamy house production with forays into experimental club, juke, and techno, Before I Die expands into trap, industrial techno, and downtempo alongside her typical atmospheric house productions. She also incorporates more storytelling into her lyrics this time, using Korean to illuminate specific incidents and English to convey her feelings in broad strokes. At its best, the album explores the contours of an emotional journey in space and time. Occasionally, though, scattered moods and unfocused songwriting blunt the record’s impact.
