Review “In the Shadow of the truth”

           March 2018

In this book you follow Jaap. He is only 17 years old when the Germans put him to work. He does not end up in one of the dangerous
factories, but he is trained as a motorcycle courier. He sees multiple sides of the war. He makes friends for life. He also meets good
Germans and bad ones. Humans are capable of terrible things to survive. Yet there are also many people who want the best for him
and his friends. Because they looked like Germans. But the population soon realized that they were also forced to work for the

German occupiers. Jaap sees what hate and revenge can do.

This story is put on paper in such a personal way that it must move you. The freedom that Jaap feels on his motorcycle also comes
across very well. As the war continued, this boy felt free to drive for a while. Yet the dangers of war drew ever closer. This story will
make you look at the second world war differently. But also to the Allies. Terrible people fought on both sides of this war. With the
Germans this was mainly the SS. But there were also bad apples among the Allies. Things have been done that could not bear the
light of day. War brings out the worst in people. But also the good. Very moving and personal book.
